VARIOUS ARTISTS

Strong rockin' RnB Instrumentals, versus a dose of Link Wray infested numbers.
The simple but effective concept behind this top-notch comp is to show that the difference between Rock'n'Roll and Rhythm'n'Blues from the 1950s and early 1960s was primarily racial and not musical.
Consisting pretty much entirely of instrumentals, Rock'n'Roll Versus Rhythm and Blues is a two-sided non-stop party platter.

First, the RnB side. Ike Turner, the most well-known of the musicians to appear on this collection, gets things off to a great start with the scorching "Double Mint," and is followed by Mickey Baker's tough guitar blues, "Shake Walkin'." My reaction to "Johnnie's House Party Part 1" is: Why couldn't Earl Palmer And the Partytimers have played at some of the house parties I went to? They would have been better parties, that's for sure.
I'm not sure I want to know what "Groove Juice" is, but Pete Lewis definitely makes it sound good. Further evidence that Johnny Otis could find (and father) damn good guitarists for his bands. While Rene Hall and Johnny Jenkins get the billing as the featured instrumentalists on "Sidetracked" and "Pinetop" respectively, the unnamed sax players on each are just as impressive. The rollicking "Hot Potato" showcases Guitar Red's chops backed by a steady horn section. The wonderfully-named "Watusi Freeze" by Big Walter And the Thunderbirds is the real weird one in this bunch with its evil hoodoo-sounding roller rink organ, jack rabbit rhythms, and insane chanting and howling.

Now, for the Rock'n'Roll. I don't know if it's Bob or Jerry, but presumably one of them is the guitarist who coaxes those futuristic sounds from his instrument on "Ghost Satellite." Virtues' "Tel-Star Guitar" lopes along pleasantly enough, while the intense but too-short "Dicla" (?) by Doug Fowles And the Air-Dales sounds like something that could have appeared on an LP in the excellent Stompin' series.
"Hill Stomp" by Strangers and "Jupiter C" by Pat And the Satellites pack a powerful one-two punch as what are arguably the best tracks on this comp. Ward Darby And the Raves (and, of course, don't forget the vocal chant by The Tribesmen) perform another "jungle music" novelty number (similar in spirit to "Watusi Freeze") called "Safari" which at times almost sounds proto-rock steady. Raymark's "Back Fire" is more guitar-driven instrumental goodness, and the subtitle ("Answer to Rumble") of Norb Kabin's "Nite Rider" tells you all you need to know about this particular number.
